Welcome to Informatics Research Review

We have prepared an introductory lecture to get you started on the course in week 1 with more to follow in the next weeks. All of our lectures will be pre-recorded and available to view on-line. Live workshops and open hours will be held at various times through the semester which will be recorded, so you can watch them if the arranged time clashes with your timetable. You are also encouraged to ask your questions on Piazza and engage in discussion with your colleagues. Tutorials will be live and in-person starting in week 3. You will be contacted by central timetabling once the assignments for tutorials are known.

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

1. Select literature appropriate for the review subject , and critically evaluate research literature in the chosen area

2. Search and use appropriately databases of scientific literature

3. Evaluate and search traditional library resources

4. Discuss a research topic in detail leading to new hypotheses

5. Deliver a detailed and balanced report on a research topic

Welcome to the Informatics Research Review (IRR) course!
We are delighted to have you join us. The IRR serves as the initial step in your academic research learning journey, and we trust that your experience here will be both fulfilling and rewarding. Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to explore a topic of your choosing, allowing you to practice and master the learning outcomes outlined in the curriculum.
On behalf of the IRR course team, I extend a warm welcome to you, and we wish you a successful and gratifying academic journey ahead this semester!

Course Outline

Students and tutors will be matched up based on interests/specialisms at the start of semester 1. Students will be given examples of good reviews, guidance on literature reviewing, literature searching and citation methods. In addition they may be directed towards research seminars in relevant topics. The student should then explore the general area over the semester in consultation with their tutor. It is expected that each student will work independently and prepare in advance for the tutorials, so that they can receive feedback from the tutor and colleagues on key elements of a review. During the latter half of the semester, students will produce a substantial review of a research area.

Please note that the lectures are designed to provide an introduction and overview of the relevant course material. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the topics covered in the course, we strongly recommend delving into the books and additional resources indicated on the reading list. You are expected to learn from the papers, books, videos and discussions covered in tutorial sessions. The lectures primarily serve as a platform to help with your understanding of the key foundations of the course and to give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues. This is a large course and wide engagement in questioning and discussion will be difficult or impossible to achieve. To address this, we will post discussion topics on the course Piazza page, and smaller, more interactive group discussions will take place in the tutorial sessions. Additionally, we will organise live sessions where you can directly pose questions to lecturers, teaching assistants, and guest speakers.
