- Your Informatics computer. You will be given a computer, usually a laptop, for the duration of your studies. The computing equipment help page (link below) has details.
- General purpose servers. There are servers that you can use. You can use some of them to login from home. Others can be used for intensive computing.
- Compute servers. Informatics provides several compute servers for the use of postgraduate research students.
- Institute servers. Your institute may have servers or a compute cluster which you can use - it's worth asking your institute.
- Supercomputers. There are powerful clusters and supercomputers in the University and beyond. The GPU and cluster computing page points to more information on these.
Good practice
We have a good practice guide which tells you how to use Informatics computers considerately. In particular, crypto-mining is a breach of the University Computing Regulations and will be punished! (It's also environmentally disastrous and bad for your fellow users.)
Security
If you are accessing Informatics services from your own personal computer or from one that you manage, you must:
- keep your computer up to date with security updates and patches
- protect your computer from viruses and malware
- make sure that a screen-lock is enabled
- encrypt the disk
- follow the policy on self-managed computers.
