ANLP: Week 7: Dependency parsing

Week 7: Welcome and checklist

Welcome to Week 7! This week is the last week of lectures about syntax and grammar in the context of natural language processing.

Overview of this week

This week, we focus on dependency parsing, another way to think about parsing and overall representing the syntax of natural language. We will describe a motivation for dependency grammars stemming from modelling free word order languages, and we will describe two main techniques for parsing: graph-based parsing and transition-based parsing. We will also touch on whether the models we have learned so far are sufficient to represent natural language or if we need more expressive power to do that.

To conclude this part of the course, I expect to hold office hours on Friday 3/11 between 3:30pm-4:30pm, where you can ask any specific lingering questions about the material. Please note that the more pinpointed your question is, the more likely I am able to help in this short time.

Lecture material

Slides:

  • Lecture 1 (dependency trees) [pdf]
  • Lecture 2 (dependency parsing) [pdf]
  • Lecture 3 (expressive power of human languages) [pdf]

Readings (from the online version of JM3):

  • JM3 18.1-18.4

Lab:

  • Lab of Week 7 (probabilistic parsing) materials are here [pdf] [code]

Tutorial

  • Solution for tutorial of Week 6. Please note that Problem 4 is a challenge question, but try to at least understand the content in the framed boxes and how they relate to the exercise.

Week 7 checklist:

  • Throughout: Try out the quizzes on Gradescope and prepare by reading the materials above before the lecture. Go to lab meetings after taking a stab at the lab.
  • By Tuesday of week 8: complete the coursework 2 pairing form
