Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 

  1. select and critically evaluate appropriate literature to justify planning decisions with respect to experimental design, theoretical goals, and / or project implementation as appropriate.
  2. develop a structured proposal for their Dissertation topic / project
  3. use relevant project management strategies including but not limited to time and resource planning and risk analysis
  4. review relevant professional issues including ethics, responsible research and data management and apply these to a project proposal as appropriate.
Course Outline

This course provides structured guidance for the development of a project proposal, preparing students for the successful execution of their dissertation or project. Activities are designed to align with the above learning outcomes: selecting and evaluating literature, planning research, managing projects, and addressing professional and ethical considerations.

Key Components:

  1. Literature Review and Critical Evaluation

    • Conduct literature searches relevant to your research or project area.

    • Critically evaluate sources to justify experimental design, theoretical objectives, and/or project implementation.

    • Synthesize findings to identify gaps and inform project planning decisions.

  2. Project Proposal Development

    • Formulate a structured proposal for your dissertation or project.

    • Clearly define research questions and/or hypotheses.

    • Outline project objectives, methodologies, and expected outcomes.

    • Include milestones with estimated timeframes and detailed justifications.

  3. Project Management Strategies

    • Apply project management techniques, including time and resource planning, risk assessment, and contingency planning.

    • Develop a realistic project schedule that aligns with proposed objectives and milestones.

  4. Professional and Ethical Considerations

    • Review relevant professional issues, including ethics, responsible research, and data management.

    • Integrate these considerations into the project proposal as appropriate.

    • Reflect on stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and professional responsibilities.


On completion of this course, students will have a comprehensive, structured project proposal that demonstrates their ability to integrate literature, planning, management, and professional considerations into a coherent research or project plan.
