CSAI: Week 10
Lecture 19: Richard John's Guest Lecture
Title: ‘Policy, ethics and law: Identifying potential risks and harms of wearable AI’
Abstract: As wearable computing devices become more integrated with AI systems, for example in order to help identify objects, people or places in the user’s environment, various societal concerns are likely to arise. These issues can be considered from ethical, policy or legal perspectives. In this lecture, we will examine the differences between these three different perspectives, as well as the ways in which they may overlap or reinforce one another. The difference between law and criminology is also explained, and some particular issues relating to security and privacy are identified. The lecture will then discuss two recent collaborative research projects, on augmented reality and wearable AI, which involve interdisciplinary teams of computer scientists and social scientists, as specific examples of how these perspectives can help guide research.
