HCI: Assessment
The course has two summative assignments, both completed as part of a design project that will take you through the full HCI design cycle:
CW1: Report (50%)
The aim of this assessment – as a group – is to conduct human-centred research and to present the outcomes of that research as a report. The report will contain detailed insights into the problems and needs experienced by people in a real-world context, as well as specifications to inform the design of an interactive technology for Coursework 2.
CW2: Design Pictorial (50%)
The aim of this coursework is – for each student individually – to develop an interactive technology prototype based on the design specifications from Coursework 1. Students will illustrate their design process through a pictorial – a visual annotated report of design ideas and iterations leading up to a final prototype – in order to present a range of design ideas and sketches, and their refinement into an interactive prototype that has the potential be tested with end users.

Group Sign-Up
HCI typically involves collaboration, so we ask you to work in groups of 3-4 students for Coursework 1. You will have the opportunity to form your Coursework 1 groups during your Week 2 Tutorial, with groups formed from students attending the same tutorial session.
Ethics
Coursework 1 will include conducting studies with human participants. These types of studies require Ethics approval. We have obtained Ethics approval for studies conducted as part of this course, but only under certain conditions. Please carefully read the Ethics application that received approval. It will provide an overview of the participants and types of study activities and data collection methods you are allowed to apply as part of your Coursework 1.

Documenting the Use of Generative AI
You may use Generative AI as part of the coursework, within the limits and following the guidance of the University (see details here). If you decided to make use of Gen AI, we ask you to provide details on this and to critically reflect on the impact that Gen AI may have had on your coursework.
