CIC: Semester 1, Week 1: Introductions

This week we'll be getting to know each other and you'll learn about how computing is taught in Scotland. I’ll be interested to find out how this compares to your own education.  

1. Find out about Computing Education in Scotland.  

   1. Read the Teach CS Handbook. (Up to p32 is the most important and then you can dip into the resources when you need them) 

       

   2. Watch the overview of CS in Scotland video.  
2. Introduce yourself.  
   1. Add a photo and a short introduction about yourself for Judy and your classmates on Padlet.
   2. Now write a discussion post on EdSTEM to tell us about your experiences of educating children. 
      1. Write about how your own experience of being taught computing compares to what you have learned so far about the system in Scotland. If you were educated in a Scottish school, has it changed since you were in primary school? If you were educated abroad, is the curriculum similar?  
      2. Read and reply to the discussion thread during the week.  
   3. Set personal learning goals.  

      1. Choose and watch some of the videos from previous students, paying particular attention to their reflections about their personal learning goals.

      2. Think about what your own goals are for this course. Write down your goals and why you have chosen them. How might your experiences this year be different to the previous students, given that some of them were studying during the pandemic?  (It's a good idea to set up a separate folder or notebook for CiC to keep everything together because you will need to refer to these learning goals in semester 2).
   4. Play with a computational thinking activity. This task should be done in your own time before the online tutorial on Thursday. The purpose is to apply what you read about computational thinking in the Teach CS Handbook to playful activities childhood games. 

   5. Attend the face to face class on Thursday at 11am.
