DMP: Textbooks
The course uses two textbooks.
- Weeks 1–6
- Discrete Mathematics with Applications by Susanna S. Epp, Fifth Edition, Metric Version - The author maintains a list of errors found so far in the book.
- Weeks 7–11
- Probability with Applications in Engineering, Science, and Technology by Matthew A. Carlton and Jay L. Devore, Second Edition
Both are available online through subscription paid for by the university library: go to the “Library Resources” entry on Learn, click on the “Resource List” link, then “Core Reading” and “View online” for the book you are interested in. For Epp there is a version to view online in a browser; Carlton and Devore is available as a PDF to download.
The following direct links may work if you are already logged in to your university account.
- Discrete Mathematics with Applications (try Microsoft 365 sign-in)
- Probability with Applications in Engineering, Science, and Technology
If these are unsuccessful then use the route through Learn, which will provide authentication from the university library to the publisher.
Note: Please do not use the “Download” option for Epp but instead always choose “Read Online”. Access is capped at a limited number of concurrent users and downloading will block other students for a minimum of 24 hours.
Blackwell's bookshop on South Bridge may offer a discount to students on textbooks for the first few weeks of semester.
The publisher Cengage offer a discount of 25% on Epp's book and any others on their website by using the code AHABT1U25 before the end of November 2025.
