How to get started and earn your first badge (and marks!)

In Inf1B, there are ten badges you can earn, which are worth up to 2% each.  In order to get ready for the course and to gain your Getting Started badge, you need to follow the instructions in the Development Tools and Getting Started document, which are attached below.

To earn the badge, you have to complete the quiz, which you can find in the Assessment section one our Learn page - which is where you'll find all your weekly quizzes plus, when the time comes, the assignments.  In the quiz, you need to certify that you have correctly installed each of the required tools and followed the instructions in the document.  There are also a few questions to find out more about your programming background - though of course these are not assessed.  As with all quizzes, if you get more than 80%, you get a Mastery Badge, which is worth 2% towards your final grade, and if you get 50%-79% you will get a Making Progress Badge, which is worth 1%.

If you're having trouble with any of this, don't worry - it's normal to find it a bit confusing or overwhelming at first.  Just pop along to a drop-in lab session, which start in Week 1, where you can get help from a demonstrator, or put a question on Piazza.

To access the quiz and get your marks, go to the Assessment tab in Learn and click on 'Weekly quizzes and Assignment 1'.  If this takes you to a screen asking about an account, click on the create an account link and this will take you straight into the quiz information.  You will only need to do this once.  You will find the Getting Started quiz under the Weekly quiz tab.
