CIC: Semester 1, Week 9: Relating learning theory to educational materials
We'll spend a few weeks practising the writing and analysis skills you'll need for report 1. This week, we'll revisit the educational theory from the reading week and apply it to some example learning materials.
- Pick an existing set of learning materials e.g. CS Unplugged or Hour of Code. Select an activity which interests you and read it/try it out.
- Referring to the readings from week 6, think about which learning theory (e.g. instructivism, constructivism) has been used to design the materials.
- Write a discussion post in which you describe the materials, summarise the learning theory which you think was used by the authors of the learning materials you reviewed, and justify why you think so. This is the same set of skills as you need for this part of the assignment marking scheme: “Does the student have a good grasp of educational theory and current research on CS Education as shown in the way they describe and justify the design of their own educational materials, or in their critique or adaptation of existing materials?”. You might find it helpful to use the relevant aspects of the marking scheme from the Grasp of educational theory and current research section. Make a note of anything you don’t understand in the marking scheme to ask me either on the discussion board or in the live session on Thursday.
- In the live tutorial on Thursday you will get peer feedback on your writing and critical analysis. Put your document on a cloud system so you can share it easily during a breakout session.
Comment on the posts of other students- do you agree with their assessment of which learning theory was used in the materials based on the summary in their post? If not, tell them why.
