CIC: Semester 1, Week 5: Formative Assessment and misconceptions

A look at formative assessment and misconceptions learners might get when learning new CS topics

Weekly Tasks
We’re going to look at some strategies that might be useful in lessons and resources, in particular strategies that can be used to address and avoid learners’ misconceptions, such as peer instruction, worked examples and PRIMM.

  1. Read the short ‘Pedagogy Quick Read’ guides on:
    Peer Instruction
    Worked Examples
  2. Have a look at this spreadsheet of common CS misconceptions.
Share your reflections of the misconceptions on the discussion board.  What resonates with you?  Is anything missing?
  3. Select one of the misconceptions in the spreadsheet.  Can you come up with a Peer Instruction (PI) question to address this misconception?  We’ll share these during the session on Thursday.
