THF: Week 4: Behavioural and Cognitive Factors

Human cognition includes aspects such as perception, attention, memory, learning, problem-solving and reasoning. Cognition is also embodied - meaning it does not only involve our brains but is also shaped by our bodies and the world around us.

Developing well-designed technology requires an understanding of how human cognition works, the limitations of human cognition, and how these influence our behaviour. This week, we will explore how understandings of human cognition and behaviour can inform what we can and cannot expect users of a technology to do; help us explain causes of problems users might encounter; and provide guidance that can help us design better products.

In preparation for the lecture, please read the following chapter in the Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction textbook by Helen Sharp, Yvonne Rogers and Jenny Preece.
