Week 8: People and Layout

Welcome to Week 8!

This week we will take a better look at the users of our systems. Previously, we’ve looked at people in the sense of someone using our system and how our system will meet their needs.

Now, we will engage more with users in terms of their understanding of the world, their capacities, and, hence, their system needs. Having a better connection and understanding of our users will help us create interfaces that are more suitable for them.

This week’s videos will explain what mental models are and why we need to know about them when we want to design an interface. We will also look at affordances, metaphors, and design patterns, which all help us create better interfaces.

We will attempt to locate the slide decks for this week's videos, however, we can't promise it. We sincerely apologise for the missing slides and we will attempt to find a substitute before week 8.
