INF1-IP: Assessment

IP is assessed through 100% coursework, split into class tests and assignments.

Class tests

Class tests are held in Weeks 5, 8 and 11, with an optional catch-up session in Week 12. They are held in two sessions in AT6:06 - you will be told which session you should attend. Class tests are done online and marked automatically.

Invigilators will be in the room to ensure students strictly adhere to the rules:

1. No phones or devices other than one being used to take the tests can be out of bags;

2. No visiting any apps or web pages other than the one required for the test on the device that is being used;

3. No communicating with other students.

Students who are caught breaking these rules will be asked to leave the room and will not be permitted to retake that sitting of the class test.

Assignments

Assignment sheets are released in Weeks 3, 6 and 9. These will have multiple questions on them that you need to work through.  You are permitted to work with other students on completing the assignment sheets and to get support from any online source, including GenAI (we will work with you on how to do this effectively), however, will be assessed on them under test conditions.

The assignments are assessed in your normal tutorial slots in Week 4, 7, and 10. You will have the first part of the session to work in groups discussing your work on the sheet and ask any final questions to your tutor. Then, you will go into an assessment phase where you will be working alone to complete a form covering some part of the assignment sheet under the same test conditions that apply for the class tests. Therefore, whilst you can work with other students and GenAI to understand the sheet and to help develop your responses, you will be assessed as an individual on your ability to explain your work and adapt it to new circumstances. The assignments will be marked by hand by our course markers.

Mastery learning

This course is split into three parts and takes a mastery learning approach. This means that you must demonstrate that you have mastered all aspects of one part before you continue to the next one. You do this by getting a passing grade in both the class test and the assignment for that part. If you get a grade that does not demonstrate mastery, you will be told which parts you have not yet mastered and you will work on improving them and retaking the assessment at the next assessment point. This means that all students will be working through the course at a pace that suits them.

Each assessment is marked on a three-grade scale:

• E - Excelling – demonstrates mastery

• P - Pass – demonstrates mastery

• N - Needs work – does not demonstrate mastery

Your grade for the course is based on what assessments you have shown mastery on, and to what level, as per the table below. For example, if, by the end of the course, you have got a pass at both the 2nd class test (C2-P) and the 2nd assignment (A2-P), but have not attempted the third level, you will get 60%. If you have an excellent on the 2nd class test (C2-E), and at the third level did not get a mastery grade on the class test but got a pass on the assignment (A3-P), you would get 75%.

The minimum requirement to pass the course is to get a passing grade in both the first class test (C1-P) and the first assignment (A1-P).

There will be three class test and three assignment submission points during semester, as well as a catch-up for both in Week 12 (revision week). This means that even if you fail one of the assessments, there is still a chance to complete all of them.
