INF1-IP: Tutorials

While the lectures introduce new programming concepts, the tutorials are where you put these into practice and learn how to use Python tooling on your own machines. They are scheduled once per week starting in week 2 and ending in week 11.

They are available for enrolled students only. You will be assigned to a particular tutorial group and this session will then be visible in your timetable - this should happen during Week 1. Further information can be found on the course Learn page.

Practice tutorials

The regular tutorials take place in Weeks 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9. Each one starts with a quick introduction by your tutor, before you break up into pairs to work through a worksheet together.

These worksheets are provided as Python notebooks. You will not actually be writing code in these notebooks; the purpose of the tutorials is to practice writing code on your own machine, with local tooling and code editors. However, the notebooks are there for you to check your work as you go along. They will regularly ask you to copy over output from the code you'll write on your own machines into the notebook before you can progress to the next part of the tutorial, allowing every pair to work at their own pace. Your tutor is there to answer any questions you might have. They will also end each session with a group discussion about the tutorial's challenges.

Assignment tutorials

The tutorials in Weeks 4, 7, and 10 are reserved for the assignments. In these sessions, the first hour is available to discuss your work with your peers and ask any final questions to your tutors. Then, during the final half hour you will fill out a sheet with questions about the assignment under test conditions. For more information, see the Assessment tab.

Drop-in support tutorial

The final tutorial, in Week 11, is available as a general revision session. Here you can bring in any remaining questions to discuss with your peers and tutors in preparation for the catch-up assessment points in Week 12.
