DISS: Cluster Projects (New for 2023/24)
it is possible to conduct MSc projects that involve several students and supervisors. This year (2024/25), we will allow cluster projects of up to two internal supervisors and a technically unbounded number of students. The rules for proposing a cluster project are:
- The number of students should correspond to the breadth of the proposed project in a justifiable way; that means that every student could eventually submit a dissertation with a clear enough contribution worthy of an MSc thesis.
- If the number of students is above the supervisors' duty allocation, they will generally need a TA to aid with the project.
- Formally, although it may not be the case in the actual supervision, the students in the cluster will be divided into two groups for marking, corresponding to the two supervisors as 1st markers.
- There will be an effort to have all projects marked by the same 2nd marker, to avoid discrepancies in the evaluation.
Important: We note that, while cluster projects are encouraged on many occasions, in order to be able to achieve broader and more impactful results, that supervisors are strongly recommended to consider their capacity, experience, and availability (during the summer period) to supervise such projects. Especially considering the fact that the projects are short and students are for the most part inexperienced. In any doubt, consult the MSc coordinator well in advance.
