DISS: Ethics Approval (New for 2023/24)

Some projects may require the approval of the ethics committee in the form of a certification, that will be submitted alongside the dissertation. Familiarize yourselves with the formal process here: https://web.inf.ed.ac.uk/infweb/research/ethics-and-integrity

it is the responsibility of the supervisor and the student alike to figure out, according to the the criteria on the website, if their project requires such an approval. In any case of doubt, consult the ethics committee in the above link. It is also the supervisor's and student's responsibility to make sure the process follows through and they receive the certification around the beginning of the project (early June). We will publish exact dates, but broadly the deadline for submitting such approvals is the end of the IPP course, around the end of April.

Important: This year we will also require the 1st and 2nd marker to explicitly comment whether the project has the appropriate ethics certification. In case where there is an unjustifiable discrepancy, this will be flagged and might affect the final grade.
