Week 7: Data Analysis and Ethics

Welcome to Week 7, where we will look into what happens “after” you collected your data.

While we usually consider how we want to analyse our data when we plan our study, the actual analysis comes afterwards obviously. There are two types of data that we can collect: Quantitative and Qualitative.

Quantitative Data
Quantitative Data is mainly numerical and structured. It resulted from methods like online surveys, A/B testing, or other large-scale experiments. In order to analyse this type of data, we would utilise statistical measures, AI-techniques, and/or create graphs. As quantitative data analysis is a complex field, it is, unfortunately, out of scope for this class. We will focus on analysing more complex data.

Qualitative Data
Qualitative data is often described as rich, varied, and deep. It is the result of un- or semi-structured interviews, focus groups, Think Alouds etc. Usually, we either aim to collect structured data from a lot of participants or less structured data from a small sample size. The video on qualitative data analysis will present three proven, well-known methods with examples.

The second video will focus on ethics and how to design and conduct user studies in an ethical way. Especially in HCI, where we work with users, and sometimes vulnerable population, considering the ethical implications of a system or even just a study is crucial. For this reason, institutions like this university have a dedicated board for ethics. Before conducting a user study, you (or your supervisor) have to get ethical approval. They will go over your study design and determine whether the participants are well-informed about risks and benefits and whether you have considered all aspects of your study.

The videos will focus on common issues and how to design ethical experiments.
